Today coffee is the most traded commodity in the world after crude oil and is the most popular drink consumed throughout the world. Coffee enriches the culture of eating and drinking and forms the very basis of existence for millions of people engaged in coffee planting, preparation and industrial processing as well as in the retail industry.
In the 17th century, the drink of the Orient arrived in the Occident. The first Coffeehouses were established. In the 18th century, the planting of coffee spread throughout the tropical belt around the world, facilitated by the colonial shipping industry. In the 19th century, coffee became the leading colonial product. Consumption multiplied four fold to almost 4 million bags through colonial and retail trade.
In 1896, Johann Dietrich Rothfos founded a small business "Im Grünen Tal" in the village of St. Magnus near Bremen. In those days, green coffee was sold directly to the customer from the bag, to be roasted at home in the frying pan. In 1922 his son, Bernhard Rothfos, began his internationally renowned trade in green coffee. In 1955, he founded DEUTSCHE EXTRAKT KAFFEE (DEK) in Hamburg. In 1956, his son Jan Beernd Rothfos took over the management of the business and, in 1981, founded the CAFEA Group for the coordination of European production plants and companies. Being specialised in time-saving and long-life soluble coffees and soluble coffee drinks, for example Cappuccino, the CAFEA Group is a specialist company for coffee and successful private brands for the leading retail businesses around the world.
