Café-restaurant Zuiderterras looks like a moored ship on the river Scheldt, which is situated near the cruise terminal and the walking terrace of the same name as the restaurant. In the summer, you will find an attractive and spacious terrace in white boat oil waiting for you. The view is simply magnificent. There is also ample parking in the direct vicinity.
Architecture
The building, created by Bob van Reeth, is unique and transparent. Large window frames and mirrors create a feeling of infinite space and a certain connection to the river. The boats passing by make for a surprising and ever changing scenery.
Through the years, the hard materials (such as glass, steel plating) used for the interior were supplemented with materials that considerably improved the acoustics. In this respect, we successfully installed Venetian blinds and placed acoustic sheeting.
Kitchen
Chef Steve Conard serves contemporary cuisine with certain contrasts, pleasing both the eyes and the taste buds. The menu presents, among other things, a delightful luxurious breakfast, a fine selection of fresh and healthy salads, a well-balanced and scrumptious compilation of summer or winter dishes: fish, meat, wok and vegetarian dishes, followed by a highly imaginative dessert menu. It goes without saying that all of these dishes are prepared with products of the highest quality. Furthermore, there are several season bound dishes available: such as asparagus, young herrings, mussels, game, ...
Capacity
The Zuiderterras is also equipped to host large companies of people that want to come in for a delicious meal with a thoughtful staff at their service. For groups of 12 people or more, it is recommended to discuss the menu in advance. For groups of 20 people or more it is required to discuss the menu in advance. You are always free to contact us to make the necessary arrangements.
The restaurant has a capacity of 100 people (80 people + 20 people on the mezzanine).
The reception room has a capacity of 60 people, when seated at tables, or 80 people, when standing up.
In exceptional cases, it is possible to exclusively book both the restaurant and the reception room, bringing the total capacity up to 160 people.
History
The original Zuiderterras dates back to 1886 and was a square building in neo-classicist style. Back in those days, the Zuiderterras was the mirror image of the oppositely situated Noorderterras. The Zuiderterras has always been in the catering business, but the entire building was destroyed in a fire in 1973. In the beginning of the nineties, the current proprietors gave the order to rebuild and restore it to its former glory, a project that took two years and was spearheaded by Flemish Architect Bob Van Reeth. Thus, the Zuiderterras became a trail-blazing project in Antwerp, helping to direct the attention back to the waterfront instead of the city’s centre. The starting signal for a thorough revaluation of the quays along the river Scheldt had been given. Nowadays, we mainly focus on maintaining the timeless style of our establishment, which remains our challenge for the future.
