With over 110 hectares of vineyards at its disposal - some owned, some rented, others belonging to associates - in Metsovo, Macedonia, the Peloponnese and Attica along with wineries in Metsovo, Anavyssos and Nemea, Katogi & Strofilia SA is one of the most dynamic wine production companies in Greece. The company invests systematically in its vineyards, its winemaking facilities and its personnel and produces wines from both Greek and international grape varieties. The company has embraced two core principles: firstly, its wine-producing activities should be as environmentally-friendly as possible; secondly, it must do all it can to fully utilize its human and natural resources.

Katogi & Strofilia SA has also made a conscious choice to develop long-term partnerships with local vine-growers based on mutual trust, and to participate in the local community in every way it can.

Furthermore, the company has prioritized the development of wine tourism, setting up its own model wine-tourism centre in Greece.

The company is also involved in the active promotion of culture, and seeks to combine art with its wine-orientated activities whenever possible. Katogi & Strofilia SA is the main sponsor of the activities of the E. Averoff Gallery, and funds a range of artistic events staged by other organizations.

The Yiniets vineyards are Greece’s highest; clinging to the slopes of Mount Pindus in an area where the seasons have a rhythm of their own, the vines mature slowly. Yiniets, which means ‘vineyard’ in the local Vlach dialect, is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Traminer. The grapes are usually harvested in early to mid October; it’s as though Dionysus, the god of wine, wanted to keep these mountain vineyards in Epirus till last.

The Katogi Averoff winery is in Metsovo, a mountain village built some 1100 metres above sea-level. The oldest parts of the winery date back to 1973, when work began on a new building required to cover the company’s ever-increasing production needs. Today, after eight separate extensions and renovations, the winery is equipped with all the contemporary equipment required for producing and bottling wine. Its cellars can boast over 1200 oak barrels in which our red wines mature, while the winery shop offers rare and collectible bottles of wine for sale from its 1974 vintage on. A guided tour of the winery employs a range of audio-visual media to offer the visitor an original introduction to wine production and the history of the winery, and is rounded off with tastings of a selection of Katogi Averoff wines.
