Wine Making Traditions of the Balatonboglár Wine Region:
Balatonboglár Wine Region is located in the southern part of lake Balaton. Its surroundingis one of the most beautiful areas in Hungary. In this region, as in other regions of Pannonia, the Celts and even the Romans cultivated the grape and produced wine.

In the eleventh century, North Somogy was one of the country's most important ecclesiastical centers. Since it had been decided at the time of King László (Saint László) that Hungary was to orient itself towards western Christendom, Benedictine monks from St. Giles, France were settled in the monastery that had been built for them in Somogyvár. The Benedictines were there for 300 years, spreading western culture and civilization. Their activities included grape cultivation and winemaking, which the local populace later adopted. Somogy County received modern Hungary's first coat-of-arms from King László in 1498. At the center of the coat-of-arms is an arm holding a bunch of grapes, and today this is part of the emblem of the BB brand. According to the royal charter of endowment, wine was so plentiful in this region that Somogy County must be reckoned among the richest counties in the country. However, the 150-year Ottoman occupation set back both viniculture and viticulture. After that, a new period of growth and development began throughout Europe.

THE BALATONBOGLÁR WINE REGION:
The Balatonboglár Wine Region lies in the Külső-Somogy and Somogy*Tolnai hills on the southern shore of Lake Balaton and is roughly 50 kilometres in length and 10-15 kilometers in width. There are nearly four thousand vinegrowers working under the auspices of sixteen local appellation councils in the wine region. The area of the wine region is 2,763 hectares.
The most outstanding grape areas can be found on the slopes of the north-south ranges, which offer good nutrients and water and, therefore, are rarely touched by drought. This region gets 1,950-2,000 hours of sunshine a year, and the average annual precipitation is approximately 700 mm, which is above the national average.
The conditions of the wine region make it possible to make outstanding, lively, but lightly acidic, fruity, delicate, and elegant wines. In addition to the traditional Hungarian varieties, the world varieties, whose wines are found today in both domestic and foreign markets, have taken on a great importance. The conditions here are probably the best in the country for making delicate and non-robust muscats and sparkling wines. In addition to white wines, red wines that improve with age and are generally fresh, delicate and fruity are also produced in the wine region.
The most important varieties in the wine region are Muscat, Szürkebarát, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Olaszrizling, Királyleányka, Tramini, Irsai Olivér. Among red grapes, the most important are Kékfrankos, Merlot, Pinot noir, Blauer Portugieser, Cabernet sauvignon, and Zweigelt.

In 1987 Balatonboglár became the "International Town of Grapes and Wine".
